Avril Lavigne Is Bringing Early-Aughts Nostalgia and Emo Eyeliner to Paris Fashion Week

She’s just a girl, sitting front row. Can I make it any more obvious?

If it feels like you’ve inexplicably had the chorus to 2002 anthem “Sk8r Boi” stuck in your head this week, you’re not alone: It’s been playing in our heads on repeat each time we’ve spotted its iconic singer, Avril Lavigne, at Paris Fashion Week.

The first Lavigne spotting was on Saturday at the Courrèges Fall 2023 show. For the occasion, she donned an oversized black Vetements T-shirt printed with the extremely vibe-y phrase “I’m not doing shit today.” (We see no problem with these baggy clothes.) In an extremely on-trend sartorial choice, she chose to forgo pants, instead pairing the shirt with over-the-knee black leather boots and a long black overcoat.

On Thursday, Lavigne attended Christian Louboutin‘s The Loubi Show anniversary event, for which she donned a leather trench and mid-height patent leather combat boots.

On Saturday, Lavigne was in attendance for the Elie Saab presentation, where she sat next to fellow 2000s pop music icon Ciara and again loaded up on black leather — this time in a flower-adorned A-line dress with a matching fitted jacket. She finished the look with a perfectly edgy black smoky eye, heavy on the smoke.

On Sunday, Lavigne joined fellow Paris Fashion Week celebrity fixture Halsey and model Josephine Skriver front row at Lanvin.

There, the singer went full-on nostalgic with her beauty look, rimming her eyes in thick, inky black eyeliner (waterlines most definitely included) and incorporating matching black “tips” peeking out from beneath her blonde bob (remember tips? Ah, the punk precursor to 2010s ombré).

Paired with the tailored, corporate-goth look she wore to the show, it made for an overall vibe that was pretty much exactly what you would’ve probably predicted Avril Lavigne: The Grownup Version to look like way back in 2002.
