What the Buyers Are Buying From the Fall 2023 Runways

Dries van Noten’s gold foil coats, Loewe’s tromp l’oeil dresses and Proenza Schouler’s belted blazers (as seen on Chloë Sevigny) are especially popular picks.

We may draw connections between runways at the end of fashion month to place bets on what the Next Big Thing will be, but the trends of the season only become clear when we know what we’ll actually be able to buy from the new collections. That’s why buyers are so crucial in determining the broader themes of where fashion is going, whether that’s in terms of the color we’ll all be wearing in six months (red, probably) or the type of coats we’ll suddenly find ourselves reaching for next winter (tailored, with a cinched waist).

Now that the Fall 2023 debuts have mostly wrapped, buyers and fashion directors at the world’s most prominent and influential retailers are placing their orders — and their bets on what we’ll want to shop this year. There are a handful of specific looks they seem to agree on (like Dries van Noten’s gold foil coats, Loewe’s tromp l’oeil dresses and Proenza Schouler’s belted blazers (as seen on Chloë Sevigny). For Linda Fargo, SVP fashion office and store presentation at Bergdorf Goodman, the main takeaway from the Fall 2023 shows across New York, London, Milan and Paris was “an elevated sense of dressing,” with the most memorable looks proving to be “both incredibly wearable and simultaneously exciting editorially.”

We asked these retail experts for the trends and pieces they have their eyes on from the Fall 2023 season. Read their answers in the galleries below.

Rickie De Sole, Women’s Fashion Director, Nordstrom

Altuzarra: “We loved Altuzarra’s unexpected take on eveningwear. This wistful peacoat and long narrow skirt cut from the same fabric paired with elbow-length gloves was a favorite.”

Bottega Veneta: “[Matthieu Blazy] proves again that leather can be used in many different ways. These pieces are made to look like different skins, but are all made from printed leather. The level of craftsmanship is unmatched. The super tall, slouchy, almost pant-boots will be a must-have this fall.”

Roopal Patel, SVP, Fashion Director, Saks Fifth Avenue

Prada: “Prada was one of my top shows of the season. The effortless ease of a clean crewneck paired with an embroidered white floral skirt shows the play of something simple with something ornate. Prada skirts are iconic, as they have become collector items.”
