Clare Waight Keller, artistic director of Givenchy, could simply retire and spend the rest of her life riding the post-Meghan Markle royal wedding wave of acclaim. Instead, she’s busy flexing her sartorial muscles, creating one big fashion moment after another. In June, the British-born designer received an enthusiastic response for her fresh approach to menswear as a guest designer at Pitti Uomo. But on Tuesday evening, Waight Keller turned her attention back to the girls (with a few menswear pieces thrown in) when she presented her Fall 2019 couture collection in Paris.

Titled “Noblesse Radicale,” which translates to “radical nobility,” the collection put a modern spin on traditionally royal garb. It began as a black-and-white affair: There were houndstooth tweed dresses, flawlessly contoured gowns decorated with rows of feathers and sharp-shouldered suits. Next came a touch of pink in a dramatic ruched sleeve top, followed by more pink on a bubble-hem frock that was paired with a matching black cape.

Midway through the 48-piece collection, Waight Keller introduced a lavish shade of yellowish gold, which added a layer of opulence to her pleated and tulle-accented eveningwear. The remainder of the show felt like a brilliant deconstruction of what 18th-century kings and queens wore, complete with delicate lace, metallic brocade woven in a floral motif, ruffles and full-bodied skirts for the females, and a sequin-crusted jacket and ornately embroidered blazer for the males. The result was an explosion of cool elegance.
