For Dior‘s Fall 2019 Couture show in Paris on Monday, Maria Grazia Chiuri commissioned feminist artist Penny Slinger to transform the interior of 30 Avenue Montaigne, the house’s historic atelier and storefront. Custom wallpaper and flooring and a massive tree sculpture, all in black and white, gave the runway a dark, mystical backdrop. And while a floral walkway outside offered a reprieve, the clothes didn’t exactly lighten the mood.

Aside from the first look, which included a white top printed with the Bernard Rudofsky quote, “Are clothes modern?”, the collection was almost entirely black. There were structured wool coats, suiting and cocktail dresses, as well as more formal dresses, including Chiuri’s signature gauze-y full skirts, in addition to heavier fabrics adorned with black feathers, which lent a medieval feel in some cases. Ballgowns also had an old-world feel. Many looks were styled with fishnet tights, bodysuits and/or veils, adding to the collection’s macabre vibe. On the feet, somewhat puzzlingly given the heaviness of the clothes, were barely-there gladiator sandals. Also odd: The show closed with a model wearing a three-dimensional box shaped like 30 Avenue Montaigne — an attempt to lighten the mood, perhaps?
