Carisa Janes is already a major force in the beauty industry as the founder and CEO of Hourglass Cosmetics, an iconic, 21-year-old luxury beauty brand nestled within Unilever’s stacked portfolio. Now, the seasoned entrepreneur is applying her complexion expertise to Outside In, her new beauty brand boasting “high-performance” hybrid makeup, skin care and tools that aim to “capture and diffuse light across the skin through weightless, second-skin textures.”
“Outside In builds on my experience creating performance-driven products and represents a new opportunity to bring a vision to life through the lens of nature and light,” Janes tells Fashionista over email. “It explores a more sensory approach to beauty.”
Complexion shines as one of Hourglass Cosmetics’ core categories (see: its cult-favorite Ambient Lighting Palette), making it a natural area for Janes to continue innovating within. The founder will continue to helm Hourglass Cosmetics amid Outside In’s rollout as she further explores “how light, material and design interact.”
When it came to selecting Outside In’s debut product lineup, Janes focused on “a curation of next-generation hybrid complexion products.” Available Thursday, exclusively at theoutsidein.com, are the brand’s first three core SKUs: Silk Serum Foundation ($64), Floral Reserve Face Oil ($72) and a Serum Foundation Brush ($52).

Formulated with niacinamide and hyaluronic acid, its serum foundation offers light-to-medium coverage and a radiant finish across 25 shades developed in collaboration with professional makeup artists. But what sets the hybrid formula apart from its competitors is its “self-setting light technology,” or light-diffusing powders suspended in a liquid serum base designed to blur imperfections and refine pores.
To apply, Outside In recommends shaking well and dispensing on the back of the hand before blending with fingers or the brand’s Serum Foundation Brush rather than a sponge. In pursuit of a “second-skin finish” for all, the foundation’s formula is also dermatologist tested, non-comedogenic, hypoallergenic, fragrance-free as well as safe for sensitive and acne-prone skin.
“The goal was to create a true hybrid — something that feels like skin care but performs like makeup,” she says of the Silk Serum Foundation. “We wanted a formula that was weightless, breathable and effortless to wear.”

As any professional MUA will tell you, a seamless foundation application starts with a hydrated base. Outside In’s Floral Reserve Face Oil aims to achieve just that by creating a plumper-looking canvas for makeup with a blend of sweet almond, sunflower seed, meadowfoam seed, jojoba seed and macadamia seed oils. Mirroring the serum foundation, the lightweight, non-greasy face oil is also non-comedogenic, hypoallergenic and safe for sensitive and acne-prone skin.

Outside In also aims to minimize its environmental impact; this is reflected in the packaging, which Janes notes was “inspired by natural materials and the idea of bringing the outside world in.” The Silk Serum Foundation and Floral Reserve Face Oil are contained in rice husk bio-resin and glass dropper bottles engineered for minimal waste, while the Serum Foundation Brush features a limestone composite handle for a tactile feel and wave-like synthetic bristles for even application.
“I hope it’s a truly unique experience — weightless, seamless in application and naturally radiant in result,” Janes says. “From the textures to the packaging, every detail is designed to engage the senses and create an elevated, effortless ritual.”
