There are perfectly good celebrity style moments, and then there are the looks that really stick with you, the ones you try desperately to recreate at home. In ‘Great Outfits in Fashion History,’ Fashionista editors are revisiting their all-time favorite lewks.
Since coming on the scene in 1997, Missy Elliott has established herself as one of the greatest rappers of all time. Her style has similarly had a lasting impact on hip-hop and fashion at large, especially with what would become her signature look, which was on full display at the 2003 Grammy Awards: a velour Adidas tracksuit.
The athletic set made its mark on fashion in the ’70s before becoming a staple in the ’90s and a pop-culture classic in the early aughts. Elliott’s take was pink, with a bejeweled logo and topped with unmissable accessorized, including a fuzzy Kangol newsboy hat with a matching pink bandana underneath. She went home that night with a Grammy for the Best Female Rap Solo Performance for “Scream a.k.a. Itchin’.”

The rapper and her longtime stylist June Ambrose developed a fondness for tracksuits around this time, to the point that she’s become synonymous with them. (She’s even worn inspired costumes on this year’s “Out of This World” tour). The 2003 pink ‘fit is particularly unforgettable, and its essence is what makes the the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer’s outfits resonant across time.
