Great Outfits in Fashion History: Halle Berry's Timeless Peek-a-Boo Evening Gown

There are perfectly good celebrity style moments, and then there are the looks that really stick with you, the ones you try desperately to recreate at home. In ‘Great Outfits in Fashion History,’ Fashionista editors are revisiting their all-time favorite lewks.

The bra illusion trend is still making headlines, most recently thanks to Scarlett Johansson‘s pink Prada gown and Sydney Sweeney‘s baby blue Miu Miu slip, both from the Cannes Film Festival. But the layered look is hardly new — rewind about 27 years ago, and none other than Halle Berry was mastering the style at the Eighth Annual Fire & Ice Ball, an event held in Los Angeles to raise money for cancer research.

As a frequent name on the “Best Dressed” lists of the 1990s, it’s no surprise that Berry was one of the first to spearhead the subtly sexy design.

What at first seems to be a simple strapless floor-length black gown was made all the more interesting by the use of a contrasting white trim at the bustier, with a lacy bralette peaking out from underneath. Even though the form-fitting, mermaid silhouette looked classically stunning on its own, Berry took it to another level of fashionable with the expert layering.

The then-31-year-old paired the ensemble with tight curls, frosty eye shadow, metallic silver nails, sparkling diamond studs and a chunky bejeweled bracelet to match.
