Whether we’re shopping for ourselves or for others, it feels more important now than ever to shop consciously and only purchase items that feel special and will last. I often think about something Fashion Psychologist Shakaila Forbes-Bell calls the “four, three, two, one rule” — that is:
- shopping for you four years from now
- having at least three different occasions to wear the item
- taking two deep breaths before coming to a verdict
- giving yourself one good night’s sleep if you’re unsure about a purchase
It’s great advice, and represents something I’ve always tried to do to avoid wasting money by mindlessly buying into trends: shopping for my future self. In other words, asking myself if, say, the 2028 version of Dhani would wear this.
This is also the idea behind the Future Self envelope charm and moonstone charm bracelet we designed with indie jewelry brand Bluboho. Handmade from 10k recycled gold, these dainty charms are trend-agnostic, less than $200 and designed to last forever. The envelope motif also literally represents a “note to future self” (which is inscribed on the solo charm around a brilliant diamond, in small lettering just for the wearer to see).
The “note” can be anything the wearer wants to remember as they wear it — an intention, a goal, a mantra, or just a physical representation of how far they’ve already come in life. (You can read Fashionista editors’ notes to their future selves here.)
Given that the pieces are handmade and part of a limited-edition collaboration, only a few were made. In other words, if you’re looking for a meaningful gift with a unique, personal touch, it’s pretty ideal. Get it for someone you love, someone you’re proud of, someone who’s “going through it,” or someone who “has everything,” because they don’t have this.
Just get it soon — stock is already dwindling, and once they’re gone, they’re gone!
