Editors’ Picks are the Fashionista team’s true (#notspon) fashion and beauty obsessions, handpicked by professionals who see it all.
I’ve long accepted that my personal style is a mix of corporate casual and prep (the latter of which I credit to my adolescent years of wearing school uniforms). Trust me, I tried all the algorithm aesthetics: Quiet luxury, coastal grandma, mob wife, tomato girl — you name it, I’ve attempted to assimilate. But my closet full of blazers and loafers speaks for itself, so it was time I embraced my inner Dalton Academy Warbler.
My latest purchase levels up my business casual sartorial status to a straight-up (remote) office siren: I went on a shopping spree at Abercrombie & Fitch, and bought its dark grey pleated maxi skirt. As I looked at it on the rack, I initially thought it leaned too “Catholic school girl.” But then I peeped the thigh-high side slit, which makes all the difference.
The skirt comfortably sits mid-waist and boasts wide belt loops. The length is also perfect: The “regular” length reaches exactly at my ankles — I’m 5’4″ — meaning I’m not tripping around while walking. (For my own precaution, though, I do grab the skirt while walking up the subway stairs so it doesn’t graze the ground.)
The skirt’s versatility is extensive, too. I can dress it up — with loafers and button-downs — or down — with sneakers and tanks. Add a pair of tights and a cardigan, and it instantly becomes fall-proof.
For the first time ever, I’m actually sad there’s not an office I go to regularly where I can obnoxiously flaunt this gem around. So I guess my neighborhood library will have to suffice.
