Once upon a time, I was a middle schooler who was desperate to dye my hair blue and hot pink. I ended up using a temporary spray-on formula that made me feel right on trend — but it also made my natural curls unbelievably dry and frizzy. The pictures are, at least in retrospect, adorably cringey. More recently, I was able to revisit my wash-out dye-job days — and this time, without the frizz — thanks to Kim Kimble’s After Party Hair Coloring Conditioning Wax, a new temporary hair color created specifically for curly hair.
I got a chance to learn about the product directly from the legendary hairstylist (who has worked with the likes of Zendaya and Beyoncé), and I initially had no intention of coloring my own hair. But after seeing Kimble tint her friend’s buzzed coils a soft lavender hue, my interest in taking it for a test-drive was officially piqued.
Touted by the brand as a “color and treatment wax in one,” the gooey wax comes housed in small tubs. It’s made with a base of beeswax and olive oil, and it smooths over hair easily. The flexible formula doesn’t leave strands stiff or crunchy, and it’s incredibly pigmented — enough that it will show up vibrantly, even on super-dark hair.

There are four shades — blue, purple, red and silver — that Kimble also suggests mixing together for customized color experiences. Since many of my style icons are fictional characters, I opted for silver highlights in an effort to channel Halle Berry’s Storm from “X-Men.” We applied the formula and combed it through my curls before using a blow-dryer to help the wax set. (This is important, because when it’s wet, the pigment can transfer.) The silver hue looked brilliant on my black hair and even defined my curls.
By the time we finished applying silver highlights to my half-up look, I was flabbergasted. The results were a long way from that middle school spray-on moment. I ended up leaving the wax in for four days, and while it did flake and fade a tiny bit each day, mostly, it remained vibrant. Washing it out required no special attention: I did my usual routine without much thought for the wax, and every trace of pigment was gone after shampooing.
I’m not saying this is a product I’ll be using as part of my regular weekly routine, but should I ever get the urge to (temporarily) change up my color again, I know exactly where I’ll be turning.
