This year’s Met Gala dress code was at once very specific and very open to interpretation, leaving us wondering: How would other designers interpret “in honor of Karl”? Which body of his work would folks choose to reference? Or would they simply take inspiration from the iconic man himself? How much vintage Chanel would be worn?
As with every first Monday in May, the evening’s red-carpet looks were all over the place, and whether they fit the theme or not, some were inevitably better than others.

The Fashionista team’s favorites included archival Chanel gowns like those worn by Penelope Cruz and Dua Lipa; theatrical creations by other houses, like Rihanna’s Valentino and Janelle Monáe’s Thom Browne; and rare pops of color in a sea of black and white via Grace Elizabeth, Chloe Fineman and Lila Moss, all of whom wore pink.
