Given how quickly Telfar‘s viral vegan shopping bags sell out after dropping, owning a tote from the New York-based brand already feels like a luxury. (There’s a reason it’s called the Bushwick Birkin.) Now, the fashion label is achieving luxury status in a more literal way with the launch of its first leather bag.
Titled “The Carry,” the bag mimics the design of Telfar’s signature vegan tote, including the embossed logo and slightly slouchy silhouette. This design, however, is a “study on restraint,” according to the brand.

“Everything about this bag was designed with tactile experience in mind. Its supple folds contour to your body.” The straps are lengthened to be carried on the shoulder; hardware is minimal — just studded feet and an interior key ring. “This is not a loud bag — but what it says is real.”
The Carry will be exclusively sold at a new Telfar concept shop inside Selfridges‘ The Corner Shop in London, from Sept. 30 to Nov. 2. It will be available in three sizes — small ($400), medium ($600) and large ($960, costing more than four times the price of a typical Telfar bag, but “10 times lower than comparable bags,” the brand says. From a retail standpoint, the Selfridges exclusive means it won’t be accessible to everyone, but the brand doesn’t expect it to sell out instantly, the way its online drops usually do.

Per the press release: “The Carry is not optimized for Instagram. It should not sell out in two minutes. You should not buy it from a picture. Every aspect of this bag was designed for physical experience: you have to touch it and feel it and carry it to carry The Carry.”
In addition to The Carry, Telfar is dropping a 20-piece leather capsule collection made in collaboration with Wilson’s Leather. It includes a blazer, a trench coat, shorts, maxi skirts and flared pants. This follows recent collaborations with accessory brand Melissa for trend jelly bags; Telfar has also partnered with Converse, Ugg and Moose Knuckles.
The brand also teased a new collection of deconstructed rib basics “to be debuted at a yet undisclosed date and… location.” Here’s hoping that, and The Carry, make their way to the States sooner rather than later.
