Seeing Dakota Johnson in This Brandon Maxwell Look Made My Heart Stop

But don’t worry, I’m fine now!

When the last look came down Brandon Maxwell’s Spring 2020 runway — a voluminous white ball gown skirt with a cummerbund waist and a matching halter top — I immediately began to fantasize about which daring Hollywood star would wear it to a big red carpet event.

But never, not even in my wildest dreams, could I have imagined it would be style superstar Dakota Johnson. And that’s not just because the belly-baring, skin-revealing style is a bit sexier than she normally goes; Johnson usually reaches for Gucci’s quirky-glam styles, since she serves as an ambassador for the brand.

I cannot tell you how glad I am that she and stylist Kate Young chose this look for the 2019 Governors Awards, however, because when I saw this photo, my heart stopped. I’m fine now! So don’t worry. It did, however, also happen to clear my skin, improve my credit score by 50 points and bump me all the way up to Diamond Medallion SkyMiles status on Delta. Not only is the color and fit perfection, the styling — super simple, with Messika earrings, messy hair and a slightly smokey eye — takes Maxwell’s already sublime confection to another level.

And while we’re here, let’s talk about the rest of the best at the 2019 Governors Awards, because this red carpet was good. There was Charlize Theron in a relaxed, monochromatic look from Tom Ford’s Spring 2020 subway jaunt; Cynthia Erivo in a dramatic, slime-green chiffon number; and Beanie Feldstein in a holiday-ready sequined dress from Michael Kors Collection.
