Each takes her turn portraying Shakespeare’s Juliet.
The annual Pirelli Calendar announced the theme for its 2020 edition on Sunday, and also released behind-the-scenes imagery of its cast. This year’s calendar features a mix of A-Listers and lesser-known artists portraying Shakespeare’s Juliet as an exploration of “the intersection of love, strength, youth and beauty,” according to a release.
In the images shot by photographer Paolo Roversi, actresses Kristen Stewart, Yara Shahidi, Emma Watson, Claire Foy, Indya Moore, and Mia Goth, singers Chris Lee and Rosalia, and artist Stella Roversi serve as muses meant to invoke the timeless Juliet. Each subject was invited to bring her own interpretation of the character to bear on the images.
Shot on location in Paris this past spring, the behind-the-scenes images that have been released thus far portray the women in moody indoor spaces wearing everything from sneakers to elaborate ballgowns.
Despite using a different photographer and backdrop than last year‘s calendar, there’s nonetheless a sense of continuity in the way that both calendars have emphasized a sense of narrative over straightforward portraits. This year’s theme also marks a continuation of Pirelli’s shift away from the sexed-up imagery it was once known for in favor of something a little more emotionally evocative.
“I am still searching for my Juliet and I will be searching all my life,” photographer Roversi said in a release. “Because Juliet is a dream.”
