Raf Simons and Miuccia Prada Are an Astrological Match — But Will It Last?

Our latest astrology column tackles the compatibility of Milan fashion’s most revered design duo.

‘Til death do us Prada?

The Prada Fall 2023 show is less than 24 hours away, and as Fashionista’s resident fashion astrologer (seriously, how cool is Fashionista for letting me write this?), I looked at Raf Simons and Miuccia Prada‘s synastry chart, which compares natal charts and determines the energies between two people in a relationship. Spoiler alert: They’re a match made in fashion heaven.

Simons’ and Prada’s union was divinely scripted long before humans started draping themselves in elaborate fur skins 100,000 years ago. Before Charles Frederick Worth stitched the first designer label on a dress in the 1860s. Before Vivienne Westwood opened the ultra-punk SEX Boutique in 1974. The star-crossed friends (Prada has been married to Patrizio Bertelli, co-CEO of the Prada Group, since 1978) have known each other since at least 2005, when Simons became creative director of Jil Sander, a then-Prada Group-owned brand. The power “couple” has been “together” since 2020, and Thursday’s Prada show at Milan Fashion Week will mark their sixth runway collection as (design) partners. And as a team, they’ve come up with brilliantly glamorous geometric prints and flamboyant faux furs (Fall 2021); floral terry-cloth hoodies (Spring 2022); Kate Moss-esque metallic mesh midi skirts and logo tanks (Fall 2022); ultra-sheer, 1994-inspired outerwear (Spring 2023).

Astrologically, even without knowing Simons’ birth time (which means his rising sign, or ascendent, is indeterminable), it’s obvious the duo are a match: Simons is a Capricorn Sun and a Gemini Moon, Prada a Taurus Sun and Gemini Moon. That means the designers not only have the same Moon sign, but they also share a Sun sign in the grounding and logical element of Earth. Thus, there’s a mode of intuitive understanding between the two.

As Earth signs, they’re both goal-oriented and logical thinkers that have an appreciation for material pleasures. With their twinning Gemini Moons, they approach their emotions the same way: There’s a mutual, natural acknowledgement for each other’s sensitivities, comforts and decision-making.

Money and Success

Prada — born at 4:30 a.m. in Milan on May 10, 1948 — is an Aries rising. As an Aries rising, she has her Midheaven (or her 10th House cusp of career, reputation and status) in Capricorn. Simons’ Sun sits right on that angle. Because his Sun falls in Prada’s 10th house, Raf displays qualities that align with Miuccia’s success.

With this kind of Sun-10th House alignment, the Sun person (Simons) represents levels of achievements and authority that the 10th House person (Prada) aspires to perfect. Not that Prada needs it, but Simons lights up her 10th House and shines a spotlight on her successes and goals. There’s mutual admiration, in a professional sense, and a sense of purpose between the two because the Midheaven is a divine point in an astrological chart. To Miuccia, Raf is the perfect professional partner.

Meanwhile, Simons’ Gemini moon (which rules over emotions) is placed in Prada’s Second House of personal finances, security and resources. The Belgian designer’s Sagittarius Venus (planet of money) is placed in Prada’s Eighth House, opposing her Second House as the house of other people’s money and inheritance. In other words, for Miuccia, Raf plays a significant monetary role in increasing her own personal finances and those of her company. The brand’s financial results support this dynamic: In the first half of 2022, Prada’s sales rose 28% compared to the first half of 2021, and 46% when compared to the first half of 2019 (pre-pandemic).

Deep Connection

Both designers also share their Mercury signs in the air element: Simons’ Mercury is in Aquarius, Prada’s in Gemini.

Air signs are intellectual, communicative and value open-minded ideas and mastering the art of variety. Even though Simons’ Aquarius Mercury carries a more individualistic, outside-the-box, rebellious, stubborn nature in comparison to Prada’s artsy, playful intellect, the planets form a “trine” in their synastry chart — that’s a harmonious aspect that presents a common understanding of shared ideas between the two (kind of a we-finish-each-others-sentences vibe).

Simons’ Sagittarius Venus makes a harmonious aspect to Prada’s Neptune and Pluto, creating connections of genuine love, creativity and empathy that feel spiritual and transformational.

Challenges

However, synastry charts aren’t always butterflies and rainbows. The pair does have aspects that are considered objectively difficult in astrology. Prada’s Moon, for example, makes a strong square (harsh, unfavorable aspect) to Simons’ Mars in Pisces.

In astrology, Mars is considered a malefic planet, or a planet that brings about more difficulties than positive outcomes. Miuccia could have a hard time dealing with Simons’ impatient, strong-willed nature, especially because her Mercury squares his Mars. On the other hand, this aspect can manifest into a strong passion for success and shared goals.

Most significantly, the duo has powerful, positive aspects between their Suns, Moons and Mercury that indicate a sweet amount of compatibility in a partnership. Still, the planet that really glues two people together in a synastry chart is Saturn, planet of hard work, time, responsibility and authority. This planet isn’t nearly as significantly present in their charts, which is why I don’t see a long-term union between the two. Simons’ Saturn in Aries sits on Prada’s Aries rising, so she definitely sees the designer (who happens to be 20 years her junior) as mature, responsible, loyal and worthy of authority (even after Miuccia possibly retires). But, there aren’t enough hard, Saturnian aspects that confirm a forever partnership…

Do with that information what you will.
