Leopard Print Really Is a Neutral This Fall

Fall and winter fashion is usually dominated by solids in rich, classic neutrals, like camel, grey, burgundy and chocolate brown — but this season, there’s a specific pattern we’ve been spotting everywhere (no pun intended): leopard print.

Animal prints of all types (python, cowhide, cheetah) have never really gone out of style, but according to shopping platform LTK, searches for leopard print pieces are up 556% since August of this year. And it seems the entire fashion world agrees with Janice from “Friends” that leopard print is, in fact, a neutral.

Leopard is one of the few evergreen patterns that can feel equal parts regal and rebellious, which is perhaps why designers are emphatically embracing the pattern. Brands like Alaïa, Dior and Norma Kamali have dabbled in the print for decades; others like Saint Laurent, Roberto Cavalli and Ganni practically have statement spots in their DNA. New Spring 2025 collections from the likes of Jacquemus, Zimmermann and Prada prove that the print is as hot as ever, and will stick around well into spring.

Fashion’s current preoccupation with all things vintage has the leopard trend favoring retro silhouettes, like Penny Lane coats, T-strap pumps and fur handbags. LTK shared that searches for leopard print pants specifically have spiked 631% over the last 60 days. For that, Damson Madder, Lioness and Madewell offer popular denim options.

Party dresses in leopard or cheetah print (the latter consists of solid black spots, whereas leopards have black spots with brown centers) will undoubtedly be popular this holiday season: Go for a cocktail dress (Rumored’s mini frock is beloved by Emily Ratajkowski) or sleek gown for black-tie affairs (Laura Harrier’s collab with Reformation has a good one).
