The 1980s may have been a wild era for fashion, but this look was pretty outrageous even then. According to Mackie, this was by design: The Academy had failed to nominate Cher that year for her role in “Mask,” a decision the accomplished multi-hyphenate didn’t quite agree with.
“She was pissed off, because she didn’t get nominated for ‘Mask,'” the longtime Cher collaborator said in a 2018 interview with The New Yorker. “There were a lot of people who said, ‘That’s not fashion!’ And I said, ‘Of course it’s not fashion. It’s a crazy getup for attention.’ And it did get attention. People talk about it still.”
Luckily, she was nominated again — and won — the following year for “Moonstruck,” accepting her statue in another statement-making gown by Mackie.
