Exclusive: Naomi Campbell Reflects on Getting Cast for Runways, But Never Campaigns, in the '90s

In the new Hulu docuseries “In Vogue: The 90s,” fashion industry titans in the editorial, modeling and creative spaces tell their stories around the iconic, decade-defining moments in which they were directly involved. In the second volume of the series, featuring three new episodes, supermodel Naomi Campbell recounts her experience working as a top runway model for major brands while simultaneously receiving very limited (if any) opportunities to star in their advertising campaigns.

“I used to do fashion shows for many people, but when it came to ads, not even a thought, and that hurt. I was just like, ‘Why not?'” Campbell says in a clip exclusively shared with Fashionista. “But Ralph [Lauren] was just an extraordinary gentleman and he said to me at my fitting, ‘I’m going to give you the campaign.'”

The campaign in question was for Ralph Lauren Polo Sport in 1996, starring Campbell and fellow model Tyson Beckford. It was the first of many advertisements for the brand featuring Campbell, including a solo one the following year for Ralph Lauren Collection.

“I was like, ‘There’s no way you’re going to put me with Tyson Beckford. The whole advertising campaign is Black? I don’t believe. I can’t believe,'” she remembers thinking. “I was just shocked that this man kept his word.”

The full series includes more anecdotes from prominent figures in and associated with the industry, including Andrew Bolton, John Galliano, Marc Jacobs, Edward Enninful, Anna Wintour and more. The second volume of “In Vogue: The 90s” will be available to stream Sept. 20 on Hulu.
