Balaclavas Are the Stylish, Practical Way to Stay Cozy in the Cold

Once a utilitarian staple for cold climates and extreme sports, the balaclava has transformed into one of fashion’s most trendy and functional accessories, becoming a symbol of individuality and edge in urban terrains, thanks to its adoption by high-fashion houses and streetwear pioneers.

Some brands have become synonymous with the trending accessory, including Scandinavian label Gunia Project, founded by Mariia Gavryliuk and Natasha Kamenska. Beloved by Ukrainian influencers as well as celebs (Lily Collins has sported the brand’s balaclava), Gunia’s headwear often incorporates elements of traditional Ukrainian culture, such as embroidery and crochet (like hand-stitched appliqués), making them a symbolic blend of heritage and contemporary fashion.

The Gunia founders tell Fashionista that the balaclava’s allure lies both in its cuteness and functionality. “The inspiration came from a mix of nostalgia and practicality. Balaclavas remind us of childhood memories, when everyone had similar headgear. We saw an opportunity to reinvent this utilitarian item into something modern, fashionable and culturally inspired,” they share over email.

As for styling your balaclava, Gavryliuk and Kamenska have some advice: “Balaclavas serve as both a hat and a scarf, providing warmth and style in one piece. They can be worn under jackets or coats, with the balaclava styled as a hood. We recommend natural fabrics like wool and cashmere, as these materials are gentle on the skin and hair — but be prepared for some hair flattening! Carrying a small brush can help, but the style is worth it,” they note.

Ahead, we shopped out the newest, most on-trend winter headwear including balaclavas, snoods and head scarves. From minimalist options in solid knit fabrics for everyday commuting, to styles with bold appliqué adornments and quirky shapes, there’s truly some form of cozy head gear for everyone.
