With summer well underway, it’s a good time to take stock of what runway trends are actually translating into daily wear. From the 2023 collections so far, there’s one accessory that’s making its way into more and more #OOTDs, street style and even red carpets: belts.

Belts serve a functional purpose as much as a fashionable one. The right one can not only hold up your bottoms, but it can also add that special sauce, so to speak, on top of any ensemble. 

The waist- (or hip-) cinching accessory has been all over recent collections, in various forms: Blumarine, Patou, Moschino and more favored glimmering chains slung low around the hips for Spring 2023, while brands like Tory Burch feel out different materialities and textures for Resort 2024. Alaïa, meanwhile, fashions top-handles onto wide waist-cinchers for Spring 2024. 

It’s resonating off the runway, too. Launchmetrics reported a 60% increase in social buzz (i.e. online mentions) for chain belts this past May; meanwhile, big, gaudy buckles — not unlike those peddled by Ed Hardy and Von Dutch way back when — are trending again, with nearly double the amount of searches (194% in social buzz) compared to last May.
