It has been just over a year since the death of Dame Vivienne Westwood, and her husband, Andreas Kronthaler, has continued her legacy at her eponymous label. For his third show since Westwood’s passing, Kronthaler is finding inspiration in his late wife — not from who she was as a designer, but rather through the things she loved that brought them together as partners in the first place.
“When I met Vivienne, I was totally seduced by the fact that she was as interested in history as I was. It’s the first passion we shared,” Kronthaler told Vogue France.
The designer was reminded of Westwood’s fascination with historical art, particularly from the Renaissance, during a recent visit to an exhibition on Giovanni Battista Moroni, a portrait painter from the 16th century, in Milan. It inspired Kronthaler to incorporate the most emblematic style elements seen throughout the period into the Vivienne Westwood Fall 2024 collection.

Titled “The Tailor,” it pulls sartorial features from Moroni’s painting of the same name: mock-neck collars, frilly puff sleeves, a strong focus on decorative closures lining up and down the center of shirts, modern interpretations of panniers and pantaloons. On top of the history-inspired designs, the casting of the show also made waves: British singer Sam Smith walked the runway wearing a jockstrap and scarf cut from Westwood’s signature tartan print; Lila Moss also walked, and Kristen McMenamy closed in frosted hair and makeup to match a white, cut-out-heavy mini dress.
