Not bad for a 19-year-old.
The role September issues play in the world of fashion media might be changing, but it’s still an undeniable compliment to be picked for the cover of a glossy during this crucial month in the fashion calendar. And this year, no one has been picked for that coveted slot more than Adut Akech.
The 19-year-old South Sudanese-Australian model, who won the “model of the year” award at the end of 2018, appears on no fewer than five (!) different editions of Vogue this month.
For Vogue Australia, she wore a tulle Toni Maticevski confection and grinned directly at the camera; for Vogue Italia, she donned an elaborate headdress made of flowers and paper cups. Vogue Japan and Vogue Germany saw her working with legendary talents like Anna Dello Russo, but perhaps one of the greatest honors was appearing alongside a host of other “inspirational” women for an issue of Vogue UK guest edited by Duchess of Sussex Meghan Markle.
“A few nights ago I got one of the best surprise [sic], a phone call from The Duchess of Sussex herself to tell me she was the guest-editor of this issue. She told me that she finds me and my story so inspiring and those words I will never forget for the rest of my life,” Akech shared in an Instagram post. “What this moment means to me I can’t explain in words.”
