What the Buyers Are Buying From the Fall 2020 Collections

Saint Laurent and Bottega Veneta will be making Kering happy this year.

Here at Fashionista, we had our favorite looks and collections from the Fall 2020 shows, and we did our best to distill the trends we noticed on the runway. But at the end of the day, our opinions are just that. The only people who really have a good idea of what will be available to buy in stores and popular next season are the very people who decided what goes into those stores.

As we’ve done for years, we consulted top womenswear buyers at influential luxury retailers to find out what they were feeling from the runways in New York, London, Milan and Paris. Amid their self-quarantines and jet lag, they took the time to share their picks. It turned out many of our favorites aligned with theirs — like Bottega Veneta’s ’70s-cool, Saint Laurent’s monochromatic latex aesthetic (safe to say Kering will be happy about this) and Khaite’s cool-girl ease.

Roopal Patel, Fashion Director at Saks Fifth Avenue

Bottega Veneta: “Daniel Lee delivered a knockout collection of ready-to-wear and accessories. As soon as this look came down the runway, we knew the ‘it’ items for fall were going to be the fringe coat and pouch.”

Black: “We saw loads of strong full-black looks on the runway; best interpretations are from Saint Laurent, Balenciaga and Valentino (pictured).”

Saint Laurent: “This look really took us by surprise because Anthony Vaccarello really elevated the Saint Laurent collection with his latest runway. We will be sure to have lots of ‘Sloane Ranger’-inspired preppy menswear fabrics, similar to this look.”

Brigitte Chartrand, Vice President of Womenswear Buying at Ssense

Balenciaga: “Tailoring has been a focus for womenswear at Ssense for a couple seasons now, and it was great to see Balenciaga introduce these tailored pieces in wetsuit-like bonded jersey.”
