Walter Chiapponi made his debut as creative director of Blumarine on Friday during Milan Fashion Week. And he seems well aware of what works for the brand: For his inaugural collection, he kept its well established Y2K-aesthetic alive, perhaps with a bit of refinement.
Blumarine has become synonymous with the early 2000s aesthetic, especially over the past few years under former Creative Director Nicola Brognano — whether the look was “roughed-up” with utilitarian twists or for a “hot girl” via high slits and halter neck tops. For Fall 2024, Chiapponi invokes an eclectic mix of early-aughts staples, like cheetah prints, camisole slip dresses, pom-pom trimmed cardigans and track pants.
But his take on the era is a departure from Brognano’s in its palette and mood: While Brognano often went for faded hues and monochromatic ensembles, Chiapponi takes liberty with a wider range of colors and forgoes some of the brand’s more recent signatures (like butterfly motifs). Instead, he adds a touch of refinement through a focus on tailoring and elegant accessories, like opera gloves (in punchy yellow).
