Donatella Versace has spent the last few seasons reining in Versace‘s sexy bad-girl aesthetic via simpler silhouettes with clean lines and nostalgic references to her brother Gianni Versace’s ’90s-era designs. It’s resulted in collections that lean minimalist and even conservative, as with the power suiting-filled Fall 2023 collection — or dainty, in the case of Spring 2024’s parade of pastel mini dresses and Mary Jane flats. But for Fall 2024, she brought back some edge.
Without straying too far from the brand’s recent focus on tailoring, Versace incorporated ’80s-era punk touches throughout the suit-filled collection, seemingly designed to take one from the board room to the underground club. There’s red plaid, studded belts with chains, stirrup leggings, crystal embellishments, exaggerated shoulders, oversized knits filled with holes, one skin-tight printed jumpsuit and lots of shiny black, red and brown leather — used for outerwear, suiting, gloves, bags, pumps and studded flats.
Models wore heavy black eyeliner and, in some cases, spiked hair — another clue toward a punk theme. The cast included usuals like Gigi Hadid and Amelia Gray, as well as budding nepo-baby-model-to-watch Julez Smith (son of Solange Knowles).
The standout looks came near the end of the show: form-fitting leather and metal mesh dresses with corseted bodices and an intriguing sculpted draping effect around the hips. They feel like the most likely pieces from this collection to make future appearances in editorial or on celebrities — Anne Hathaway even wore the red one in the front row.
