Though Tyler McGillivary launched her New York City-founded namesake brand in 2018, she’s never held a proper runway show or presentation on the New York Fashion Week calendar — that is, until the Fall 2025 season.
“I didn’t go to design school, so it took me a while to figure out how to produce things and how to make sure the clothes look the way you want them to, but also how to create a collection that felt really tight and really well connected,” the 30-year-old designer told Fashionista at her Brooklyn studio. “[Doing a show] felt right, right now, both monetarily and experimentally.”
The kitschy, graphic, often nature-inspired brand (“TMG,” as McGillivary calls it) is — all things considered — a contemporary label. Its prices range from around $80 for a graphic baby tee to $350 for a knit dress featuring three-dimensional hand-crocheted vines and roses. It sells mostly direct-to-consumer, but also works with distribution partners like Nuuly, Urban Outfitters, Free People, Revolve and Lisa Says Gah.
While McGillivary has found success in appealing to a younger market of customers who are more willing to purchase fun, quirky, nostalgia-inducing pieces rather than neutral wardrobe basics, her hope for this runway presentation is that it helps take the brand in a more serious direction — specifically as it pertains to wholesale.
“I love working with the retailers that we do […] but I think we have a lot of room there for growth,” McGillivary admitted. “Our main goal [of having this show] is for it to act as a form of marketing for the business. We’re hoping to get a lot of press around it. We’re hoping that a lot of people come and feel excited by it and then share the event with their followers, expanding our demographic and our customer base.”

Though McGillivary’s brand can certainly be categorized as emerging, it’s already generated quite a bit of demand; a line of impeccably dressed young people wrapped around the entire block ahead of the runway show. As the runway show commenced, there wasn’t a single empty corner in the room. Fans of the brand were given standing tickets, sipping mini martinis and “ooh”-ing and “aah”-ing over the ’90s-inspired stomps each model brought to the catwalk.
The theme of the collection, “Date Night,” took center stage as the first model ran onto the runway anxiously pulling her stockings up before strutting toward the cameras as if they were a potential partner.
The next model appeared in a simply shaped straight mini skirt with a taxi cab printed across it. “I imagined walking around Chinatown or going to your favorite stores and just seeing this sort of continuous neon signage, yellow taxi cabs, red tablecloths at little Italian restaurants, the green of a martini’s olive. The collection is built on these very basic building block colors of New York,” said the designer. (For inquiring minds, McGillivary’s favorite martini in New York is at Michael’s in Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn.)

Beyond the New York fixtures that inspired the new collection, McGillivary also pulled from the romance of a late date night, sourcing archival imagery from the public domain of different couples kissing and making a print out of lipstick marks.
“It’s all about one of those nights that you just start getting drinks with somebody, and as the night continues, you find yourself wandering home at 4:00 a.m. with your shoes in your hand,” explained the designer.
Rhinestone flower-adorned little black dresses, vintage brooch-covered evening gowns and fuzzy fruit-hued sweater-and-skirt sets further embodied McGillivary’s vision of a perfect date night look.
