Tom Ford's Boob Plate Is Already a Strong Contender for Fashion Item of the Year

How are breasts supposed to get the support they deserve in 2020? The answer is simple: Tom Ford‘s shiny metal boob plates.

First spotted back in September at the designer’s (literally) underground Spring 2020 show, the lacquered bustier — retail value: $15,000 — encases the wearer’s chest to form a layer of protection. But unlike more traditional, less fashion-y armor, it’s done in a hot-pink hue and looks more like molded plastic than iron or steel.

Such a garment seems only fitting for a “Wonder Woman” costume, but fashion editors and celebrity stylists think otherwise. In just one week, the next-level bra landed on two big February magazine covers and made a well-received appearance on the red carpet, which is quite the feat for any runway item. Let’s run this down, shall we?

The Tom Ford boob plate (breast plate? bustier?) made its first big 2020 appearance on the February cover of Harper’s Bazaar, starring Gwyneth Paltrow. And we must say: Metallic fuchsia is a lovely complement to her blue eyes.

Then, fellow Hearst title Elle kept its February cover spread in the Tom Ford family, featuring the shiny metal bra in a different hue on Zoë Kravitz.

Finally, Zendaya arrived to the 2020 Critic’s Choice Awards in the pink warrior piece, pairing it with floor-length magenta skirt. Her outfit was easily the highlight of the evening, if you take into account the internet’s incessant chatter over the breastplate.

Well, there you have it, folks: If it isn’t clear to you by now, the sartorial powers that be are really excited about boob plates — particularly those of the Tom Ford variety. It’s a daring look for sure and requires equal amounts of confidence and commitment, but if you’re the type to turn to top editors and Hollywood’s finest for inspiration, then perhaps it’s a matter of time before we’re all making shiny molds of our breasts.
