Early on this New York Fashion Week, we noted that many showgoers were piling on statement furs to keep warm, with both faux and real iterations becoming the most popular street style outerwear choice. While there’s obvious utility to embracing coziness during the February shows, another standout street style trend is a bit less functional (but no less delightful): the tie.
Attendees at this season’s New York shows embraced the menswear staple in droves, establishing it as a playful, genderless punctuation mark to buttoned-up looks and more casual ones alike. We spotted many in traditional neutrals and stripes, accessorizing tailored menswear-inspired ensembles — but we also found joy in a handful of quirkier designs, like one in a Kelly green zig-zag shape (fun!). Many showgoers wore their ties beneath layers, whether peeking out from multiple coats or tucked into sleek tube tops wrapped around collared shirts. Of course, noted tie enthusiast Thom Browne drew plenty of tie-wearers to his show on Tuesday, rounding out a week full of accessorizing that would make 2002 Avril Lavigne proud.
