I’ve never been a “bath person.” While I love the idea of almost any wellness ritual designed to soothe stress and tension (particularly one that’s been scientifically proven to have a whole host of health benefits), I usually find soaking in a tub pretty boring. But I’ve been reading up on the benefits of topical and transdermal magnesium recently, and so when I encountered Flewd’s magnesium-rich Ache Erasing Anti-Stress Bath Treatment, I was inspired to give it a go after a particularly tough hot yoga session left my joints feeling creaky.
The brand claims its products, made from 99% “natural origin” ingredients, contain eight times more magnesium — which has been shown to ease cortisol production, relieve pain, soothe inflammation, enhance recovery, reduce migraines, boost energy levels, inhibit anxiety and promote restful sleep — than other epsom salts on the market. (As a sufferer of generalized anxiety disorder, occasional migraines and the stress-y vibes of being a New Yorker, all of this is massively appealing to me.) The formula relies on magnesium chloride hexahydrate, which the brand touts as a bioavailable form of the nutrient. It’s also spiked with nootropics to boost serotonin, omega-3s and vitamins C and D, which, according to the brand, dampen adrenaline to calm stress, soothe muscle inflammation and repair tightness and tension.
The scent is also designed to promote relaxation: With notes of cedarwood, mandarin and clementine, it’s citrusy, but more soothing than energizing. And, especially in comparison to all those fizzy bath bombs on the market that come with scents like cake and unicorn tears? It’s rather elevated.
I did my best to find enjoyment — rather than boredom — during my soaking time, putting on a chill Spotify playlist and even taking the opportunity to practice some meditative breathwork I rarely remember to do. I was able to soak for about 20 minutes before the bath water turned tepid and I decided it was time to end the treatment.
Overall, it was a huge win: Not only did I find myself actually enjoying a bath, but I also noticed the benefits mentally and physically for the next day or so. I was less sore than I usually am post-workout, got a pretty decent night’s rest and generally felt restored and calm. I may not ever adopt “bath person” as an identity, but I will definitely be more likely to partake in an occasional bath with this multi-benefit treatment in the mix.
