This Long-Lasting, Smudge-Proof Brown Mascara Was Made For Redheads

Every mascara in my beloved makeup collection serves a unique purpose, whether it’s a curved wand for a fluttery application, a teeny-tiny brush for lower lashes or a waterproof formula for when I’m anticipating melting into a teary-eyed puddle. But, for the longest time, I never diverged from classic black mascara. With more colorful mascaras popping up across the beauty market — your electric blues, berry tones and forest green hues — I took a baby step by finally relinquishing my all-black eye makeup for a softer alternative: chocolate brown.

Though, I didn’t have to venture too far outside of my comfort zone: I switched out my all-time favorite, Maybelline’s Lash Sensational Sky High Mascara, for its True Brown colorway. Now, I’m a proud brown mascara convert.

With my auburn hair and matching eyelashes, the softer hue accentuates my natural lash tone while still delivering that desired lift and long-lasting curl. It’s my ideal eye product for a no-makeup makeup day, but it also adds just the right amount of drama when paired with a warm-toned smoky eye.

It’s certainly not just the chocolate-y color that makes this $13 mascara the GOAT of my stash: Its long-wearing, bamboo extract-packed formula stays on all day without any smudging or flaking — a crucial trait as someone with sensitive eyes (and oversized glasses). I only reach for waterproof mascara when I’m predicting waterworks, but Sky High’s original formula has held up for me against sudden downpours and unexpected tears without any streaks. (Though it also has a waterproof version!)

Of course, I haven’t completely sidelined my hoard of black mascara, but these days I’m sporting soft brown lashes any chance I get. As for the electric blue mascaras of the beauty world, it might take me a few more baby steps to get there.
