The 7 Designers Participating in New York Fashion Week for the First Time

Keep these names on your radar this season.

In just the blink of an eye, New York Fashion Week is officially back with a jam-packed schedule, featuring over 75 brands slated to present new collections. Between traditional runways, presentations, appointment-only viewings and immersive experiences, the week-long festivities offer an opportunity to bear witness to trends being set in real time.  But perhaps the most exciting part is the roster of new talent, imbuing the famously exclusive industry with fresh outlooks and interesting points of view.

For Fall 2023, we have a handful of exciting first-timers hosting in-person activations, including Nayon, Kallmeyer, Koltson by Robert Rodriguez, Ayama Studio, Sam Finger and Shame. Read on to familiarize yourself with them all.

Nayon

Nayon is a New York-based brand by South Korean designer Nayon Kim, the 2021 CFDA Design Scholar Award who has worked as a stylist and a correspondent for Harper’s Bazaar Korea. The label explores ideas of construction and deconstruction in monochrome, gender-neutral silhouettes. Nayon is hosting appointments during New York Fashion Week for the first time on Feb. 15.

Kallmeyer

Already beloved for its elevated everyday staples, Kallmeyer is staging its first-ever New York Fashion Week presentation on Feb. 14. Daniella Kallmeyer — who earned her design chops at the London College of Fashion and has worked for prominent designers such as Proenza Schouler and Alexander McQueen — launched the eponymous label over 10 years ago, with a focus on meticulous tailoring and sophisticated materials, plus mindful production. (Approximately half of its last collection was made from deadstock fabrics or recycled yarn.)

Koltson

This may be design label Koltson’s first fashion week, but the brand is helmed by seasoned designer Robert Rodriguez. After studying at FIT, Rodriguez went on to work at Christian Dior and Shelli Segal before launching his namesake label. Ahead of Koltson’s first collection, Rodriguez described it to the CFDA as “a common thread between art and fashion.” The presentation — taking place on Feb. 14 — will also feature paintings by abstract expressionist Vicky Barranguet on display.

Ayama Studio

Ayama Studio prioritizes style just as much as utility, boasting a selection of trench coats, bombers and pants made from leather, waterproof recycled Japanese cotton, dainty lace and pleated organza. Designer Maya J received degrees from prestigious institutions like FIT and London College of Fashion — and won the Amiri Prize (Mike Amiri’s fashion incubator for undiscovered American fashion talent) — before founding Ayama Studio. The brand will make its New York Fashion Week debut Feb. 14, by appointment.

Sam Finger

Sam Finger’s first New York Fashion Week collection — debuting with a presentation on Feb. 11 — will spotlight upcycling and reflect the ways in which New York City (where he grew up) has shaped him, notably through ideas of self-expression and self-liberation.

Shame

New York-based Ramona Beattie launched Shame in 2020 and, since then, it has become known for its one-of-a kind, seductive garments, the patterns for which are available for sale to the public. Shame joins the New York Fashion Week lineup with a runway show on Feb. 8.

Creature World

Creature World, the brainchild of artist Danny Cole, has dipped its toes in various projects over the past few years, including fine art, graffiti, live experiences, exhibitions and technological art. It’s now expanding into fashion: On Feb. 14, it’ll present its inaugural collection, full of colorful designs reflective of the brand’s playful ethos.
