The dress code for the 2024 Met Gala red carpet was “The Garden of Time,” after the 1962 J.G. Ballard short story of the same name, about a couple living in an idyllic-seeming villa that reveals itself to be anything but. If we’ve learned anything from past Met Galas, though, we know that the sartorial interpretations of the theme tend to skew more literal (so, for this year, florals, clocks and other elements involving gardens and time), if not completely off. Still, with Loewe as a sponsor and a co-chair cohort that included Zendaya and Bad Bunny, we knew we’d be in for a treat.
And a treat it was. There were a ton of florals, as expected, but done in fun, exciting and really beautiful ways — by Thom Browne for Gigi Hadid, Loewe for Ayo Edebiri, Danielle Frankel for Rebecca Hall and much more. There was even the occasional reference to time, like Tyla’s sandy gown and hourglass bag by Balmain. Zendaya even managed to squeeze in an outfit change, debuting a second look right as the cameras were getting ready to pack up.
