Sergio Hudson Fall 2025 Finds the 'Opulence' in American Sportswear

Sergio Hudson understands how to dress powerful women: It’s proven by his references (he’s often inspired by Robin Givens’ character Jacqueline Broyer in the 1992 film “Boomerang”), his clients (Michelle Obama, Dr. Jill Biden, Keke Palmer, Lizzo, Beyoncé and Kamala Harris) and, of course, his clothes. The latter never fails strike to a unique balance between aspirational and wearable.

His eponymous brand’s core lineup of monochromatic separates, corseted tailoring and sharp suiting is striking, yet also inherently wearable and practical. It’s what a strong, boss businesswoman wears while running her empire.

For Fall 2025, Hudson elevated his American sportswear aesthetic even further.

“This season I really just wanted to show American sportswear in a very luxe way,” he told Fashionista backstage pre-show. “I feel like everyone is down and so depressed, so I just wanted somebody to see something beautiful and be inspired to say, ‘We can dream, we can still go forward [and] we can still push.’ To me, I would call [the collection] American sportswear in an opulent fashion.”

This took shape via the voluminous fur coats made of Mongolian sheep wool, luxe cashmere sweaters and hand-embroidered tops. Of course, Hudson’s natural affinity for suiting was also on display via three-piece suits in pinstripes and tweed. (Menswear — which the label introduced last season — also was a formidable presence in the lineup, with fitted, double-lapel trenches and velvet suits.)

“The collection is very much a bossy woman in a man’s suit, but with a cinched waist,” he shared.

Asked about America’s current social and political climate, Hudson acknowledged that it’s hit him “emotionally,” but, real talk? “We have bigger fish to fry than [just] worrying about politics as Black people,” he said..

“As an independent, minority designer, my main concern is […] how do we grow?” he continued. “How do we grow so future generations can be a part of this industry and it doesn’t have to be so hard? That’s my vision; that’s why I continue to push forward and show at New York Fashion Week, because there is some young kid that’s looking up to me and they’re saying, ‘If he can do it, then I want to do that one day.'”
