It’s Moira Rose’s favorite season! The major 2020 awards show circuit officially kicks off on Sunday, with the Golden Globes — but many of this year’s nominees gave us a taste of what’s in store for the red carpet on Thursday (Jan. 2), at the Palm Springs International Film Festival gala. Jennifer Lopez, Laura Dern, Charlize Theron, Greta Gerwig and other big awards-season contenders walked the step-and-repeat — and set the bar very high for all the red carpets to come.

From the designer picks we saw in Palm Springs, we get the sense that we’re in for some bold, glitzy and even surprising looks this awards season.

Take, for instance, Golden Globe nominee for Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture J.Lo: Though she’s been known to prefer formfitting embellishment for the red carpet, she opted for a strapless ballgown with an all-over pastel-pink rose print from British designer Richard Quinn’s Spring 2020 collection. (She received the 2020 Spotlight Award, Actress at the event.)

Plus, Dern plucked a dark, moody floral ensemble from Erdem’s Spring 2020 runway, Gerwig went for velvet-and-fringed Gucci and Theron went for a netted take on Christian Dior suiting. See what some of the season’s top awards contenders wore to the 2020 Palm Springs Film Festival gala ahead of Sunday’s Golden Globes.
