Sandy Liang Does Clothes for Busy New York Girls for Spring 2025

In many ways, Sandy Liang is the girlhood whisperer of the fashion industry. Every season, seemingly without fail, her collections go viral on social media for embodying a sense of feminine nostalgia; she reclaims the girly-girl archetype as something to embrace instead of shy away from through bow-adorned blouses, teeny tiny mini skirts and pops of pink.

Since presenting her Fall 2024 collection in February, Liang welcomed her first child. But the designer says it didn’t impact her design process as much as one might think. “I had to design the collection so early because my team had to plan for my pregnancy and me being sort of away for a little while,” Liang told Fashionista backstage at her Spring 2025 show. “So it’s really fun to see how my brain was before the birth. I’m excited to see how the collection changes and develops even further now that I’m a mom, although I don’t think it will.”

Compared with the previous season, Spring 2025 is a bit more pared back, according to the designer: “There’s a lot of jersey tops and skirts that kind of are really simple until you put them together…I love the idea of people wearing an ensemble, but it’s not like a super-tailored, matchy-matchy boring sort of thing. It’s just easy breezy, on the go.”

Though this collection indeed includes some of the more dressed-down pieces than we’re used to seeing from Liang, there was also a new touch of glitz and glamour via crystal chokers, studded denim and brocade mini dresses.

And of course, “the accessories kind of tied the whole look together,” said Liang. Also included in the accessories roundup was a collaboration with Android. Select models wore silver pins with tech-themed emblems on them and audience members received a box of their own to go home with.

“The phone is so high tech, but it reminds me of something that, at its core, is just very simple,” explained Liang. “The hairpins were something I’ve done before with different [symbols], so with Android, we put a bot on it and it helped to secure some of the bandanas [on the runway]. It’s very real girl on-the-go vibes. It just felt very complete like that.”

The brand has also been credited with helping to spur fashion’s ongoing bow phenomenon. That held true this season, but in contrast with the front-and-center ribbons of the designer’s previous collection, Liang incorporated the adornment more subtly this time around. Grey collarless blazers for Spring 2025 feature a monochromatic bow placed just below the collarbone, nearly making the shape blend in with the garment altogether; a mini trench coat features a bow stretching across the shoulder blades in a cape-like fashion.

“I feel like I’m always designing for a very practical person. She’s a New York girl. We’re doing things all day long,” Liang said. “Nothing’s too precious, even though it looks precious…that’s what I love about the clothes.”
