Rick Owens is not one to think inside the box, if you will. After all, it was in the not-so-distant past that the renowned international designer sent both human backpacks and full-frontal nudity down the runway in the same show. But in at least one respect, Owens is seemingly beginning to think like the rest of us: That we’re inching closer and closer to a bona fide dystopian existence — climate-crisis-fueled or otherwise — by the day.
Presented on Thursday in Paris, his Spring 2024 collection — though an utter feast for the eyes, laden with always-inventive silhouettes and lush rich textures — was deeply Orwellian in both tone and execution. Garments came sci-fi-ready with elongated, oversized statement shoulders and utilitarian textiles like canvas and well-worn leather, while the models themselves sported chilling black contact lenses and sheer facial coverings. And then there was the color palette, comprised of a spectrum of burnt shades of orange, pink and crimson — because in this despotic fantasy, Owens is anything but subtle.
