Reformation's Debut Handbag Collection Channels '90s Minimalism and 'Quiet Luxury'

The three new bag silhouettes start at $248.

Reformation just dropped its first-ever handbag collection, introducing a range of 20 vintage-inspired styles priced between $248 and $698.

The handbag collection comprises three core silhouettes — all some variation of a shoulder bag, though one can also be converted into a wristlet clutch. Chiara, the aforementioned convertible style, has a geometric concave point in the center. Rosetta is a quintessential shoulder bag shaped like a half-moon. Vittoria is a slouchy, asymmetrical tote with a bow right above where it sits on the shoulder. While the majority of the available colorways are neutrals, there are also a few punchier options, like metallic silver, chartreuse and dusty lavender.

“Vintage is a core design principle for Ref, and for this collection in particular we were inspired by ’90s minimalism, with a touch of the early aughts,” Alison Melville, Reformation’s general manager of product innovation, tells Fashionista via email. “We really want our handbags to withstand the test of time and be worn by our customers for years to come, so we focused on timeless shapes and clean lines. There is definitely a sense of quiet luxury throughout.”

The brand — known for its cheeky slogan, “Being naked is the #1 most sustainable option. We’re #2” — makes each bag with bovine leather sourced from farms in Italy and Germany that, according to the company, have zero-deforestation policies. Given Reformation’s focus on sustainable fashion, it’s also exploring the possibility of debuting plant-based handbags in the future.

“We’re currently in the process of testing several wholly plastic-free leather alternatives — including Ecovative’s Forager textile, a mushroom-based leather alternative — so this is something we’re actively exploring and looking to expand into once we find a solution that meets our plastics standards,” says Melville. “Unfortunately, most leather alternatives still rely on plastic in some capacity. For now, we continue to use leather in our products due to its quality, versatility and longevity, which minimizes waste in the long term.”

For the collection’s debut, Reformation tapped actor Camila Morrone (who most recently starred in “Daisy Jones & The Six“) to appear in a campaign styled by Danielle Goldberg

Following the launch, Reformation plans to drop new styles monthly in stores and online. Plus, bags are eligible for the brand’s recycling program, which also accepts garments and Reformation shoes in exchange for store credit.
