Spread throughout the Historic District of Savannah, Savannah College of Art and Design has become an unassuming creative hub for the new fashion vanguard. That talent and promise was on display on Friday evening at the school’s 2024 student runway show — an experience that was on par with that of the New York Fashion Week catwalks.
With a giant screen facing the rows of leather ottomans set up in the courtyard of the SCAD Museum of Art, it was clear upon arrival that showgoers were in for a spectacle. The event opened with “Déjà Rêvé,” a film directed by SCAD alum Paris Mumpower starring Rainey Qualley that highlighted garments, accessories and jewelry from over 70 fashion students. Then began the runway show itself, which was a wonderful mix of wearable and conceptual, everyday and avant-garde. Menswear was particularly impressive: It’s no easy feat to reimagine a category not known for constant innovation, and yet the playful proportions, unexpected textures (like tassels and beading) and bold fabrics proved students were more than happy to take on the challenge.
Coco Rocha — who once again served as a runway coach for the show — closed in a sweeping black and white coat designed by Andrea Rios. See some of the stand-out looks from the graduating designers’ collections below.
