Ph5's Fall 2024 Collection Is for When You Want to Hide from the World and Knit

Ph5‘s Fall 2024 collection thoughtfully pulls apart the metaphoric threads of a scarf. The clothes spotlight the accessory as a way to cocoon yourself, and as a tool for starting conversation — as Ph5 collections usually do.

“We really do care about what’s happening with the world. We’re very attuned to what’s happening with political movements and environmental movements,” Ph5 Founder Wei Lin told Fashionista. Past seasons have focused on environmental challenges and workers’ rights, for instance.

For Fall 2024, scarves are a tool for concealment, worn as babushkas that obscure the face from view, representing the designers’ desire to hide a bit from the chaos of the world. When asked if there was any crisis in particular on her and fellow Ph5 Designer Zoe Champion’s minds, Lin sighed, before saying, “Really, it was the Israel and Gaza situation. We try to incorporate it a little bit but not make it the focus point. It’s something that we cannot fix and cannot solve, but it is a problem we are very aware of. We just want to kind of hide, in a way, within our scarf.”

While the cozy knit accessories can be used as a shield of sorts, Champion stressed that they’re also a symbol of connection and dialogue: “Knitting has been historically a way for women to come together when they often didn’t have a voice or weren’t able to talk,” she noted, referencing the history of knitting circles as starting places for social movements.

“[Knitting is] so meditative… someone told me this morning they saw a police officer on the train knitting on their way to work and just blocking out everything,” Champion added. “People too often think of knitting as a ‘granny’ thing or crafty thing.”

The collection, presented in a Manhattan office building, was styled to channel the energy of this “busy woman, making money, reading The Financial Times,” who really “just wants to sit at home and knit,” Lin explained. The apparel reflects this: Blue shirts easily become beautiful blouses for brunch while brownish vests look office-ready.

Customer-favorite design and technology details return for Fall 2024, like asymmetric hemstrompe-l’œil prints as well as both heat- and UV-reactive fabrics — used for knit “jeans” and geometrically patterned skirts, respectively. Inspired by the rising popularity of skiing, Ph5 also introduced activewear for the snow sport. In line with the brand’s focus on innovative materials, 80% of the items are made with recycled materials or natural fibers like merino wool.
