Starting May 15, Peter Do is Helmut Lang’s new creative director.

“No one embodied radical thinking more definitively than Helmut Lang,” the designer said, in a press release. “It is my deep honor to be entrusted with ushering in the next chapter of Helmut Lang’s legacy.”

Do — who graduated from the Fashion Institute of Technology and won the 2014 LVMH Graduate Prize — will present his debut collection for the brand this September at New York Fashion Week, for Spring 2024. He will continue work on his own brand while based in Helmut Lang’s New York City design studio.

Founded by the Austrian designer of the same name in 1986, Helmut Lang helped define minimalist fashion, which Do has practiced throughout his career. (He worked at Céline and Derek Lam before launching his eponymous line in 2018.) His approach to dressing is intelligent but understated, which are in line with the historical aesthetic of his new employer.

“I am excited to learn from the foundations this house stands on and to continue creating new, energetic clothes that inspire people to challenge their understanding of what is possible when it comes to expressing their individuality,” Do said.

“We are thrilled to have Peter,” Helmut Lang CEO Dinesh Tandon said, in a statement. “His clear and innovative approach to design very much aligns with the brand’s ethos and heritage. His experience with luxury fashion houses and his acclaimed eponymous label make him a natural choice for this role.”
