Oscar de la Renta Shows Floral Prints Are Beautiful in Any Stage
By The Citizen on February 17, 2023
There’s no need to ditch blossoms by the end of summer.
In a short film debuting its Fall 2023 collection, Oscar de la Renta shows the more romantic side of New York City. Grabbing oily slices of pizza in a lilac coat or hot-pink fringed top. Exploring the Met in a blue baseball cap and black lace dress. Dancing in Washington Square Park in a checkerboard-patterned gown. (Gowns in parks seem to be a recurring theme for the fashion house.)
Fun imbues every autumnal look. But the visual undercurrent of the collection is florals.
We don’t need to remind you how “groundbreaking” florals are, especially for spring. They certainly still feature in fall collections quite regularly (hello), but the cooler weather tends to make designers lean on them less. Not Oscar de la Renta, though: Especially under the creative direction of Fernando Garcia and Laura Kim, florals have become a signature, as synonymous with the house as its dreamy gowns.
In the latest collection, geraniums, chrysanthemum and morning glories sprawl across garments in a vast color range from ivory to pinks, blues and reds. Blooming biodiversity tangles on the fabric of dresses, cardigans and jackets. Sometimes, florals are subtly styled in an otherwise monochromatic outfit; other times, they envelope the whole look as the star of the show.
Fall 2023 also argues that these botanical designs are beautiful in any state, whether fully developed or partially sketched. So, the designers included incomplete drawings “reminiscent of an artist who has left portions of a blank canvas, laid bare to the viewer’s imagination” among the prints, according to a press release.
Even in the looks without flowers, the brand creatively plays with colors and textures. Shiny bubble hems float in lavender. Tweed suits are tailored sharply in bright teal. Sequin-speckled coats have an ombré sparkle. For Garcia and Kim, fall is still a season of abundance — just like spring or summer.
