These are the stories making headlines in fashion on Friday.

The lucrative rise of “superfake” handbags
The growth of the counterfeit luxury bag market has accelerated in recent years. In China, where the vast majority of these goods originate, the replica business is becoming increasingly advanced through technology and hard-to-track supply chains. As big fashion houses spend billions a year fighting dupes, this phenomenon raises the question of: What exactly is an authentic bag? After all, most houses work from machines and templates, the same way that dupes do. Furthermore, the fashion industry’s obsession with authenticity is at odds with the long history of mimicry in clothing and accessories, even before the mass-production inventions of the 19 century. {The New York Times/paywalled}

What to expect for Saturday’s coronation fashion
King Charles III and Queen Camilla’s coronation this Saturday will have a more modern feel compared to previous coronations, predicts the Business of Fashion. While the ceremony will include historic elements such as the St. Edward’s Crown, the dress code will be less formal, and senior women in the royal family may not wear tiaras. The scaled-back approach is thought to be due to the cost of living crisis in the UK. Meanwhile, outside of Westminster Abbey, British brands are also taking part in the festivities, releasing limited-edition products catering to tourists and dressing up their storefronts in honor of the occasion. {Business of Fashion/paywalled}

Is “reef-safe” sunscreen really environmentally friendly?
“Reef-safe” marketing promoted by sunscreen brands is now being challenged by industry experts. For some time now, countries like U.S. Virgin Islands, Key West, Palau, Aruba have passed legislation in favor of “reef-safe” products and banned ingredients like oxybenzone and octinoxate, which are associated with the degradation of reefs. However, per Michelle Wong, the science educator and cosmetic chemist known as Lab Muffin, “There isn’t any solid evidence of sunscreens having caused harm to coral reefs.” In fact, this type of “reef-safe” marketing seemingly lets sunscreen companies off the hook for other harmful ingredients, in addition to packaging, sourcing and manufacturing that also cause environmental degradation. {Beauty Independent}
