Lord & Taylor set to relaunch online
The department store Lord & Taylor, which closed its Fifth Avenue flagship in 2019 and its remaining stores the following year, will relaunch as a discount luxury e-tailer. Sina Yenel, an executive at Lord & Taylor’s parent company Regal Brands Global confirmed the news with Business of Fashion on Friday. As an off-price retailer, it will sell items sourced directly from distributors, as well as Lord & Taylor-branded products, which will also sold by to-be-announced wholesalers. {Business of Fashion/paywalled}
Vox Media announces layoffs and reorganization
According to an internal memo at Vox Media, staff at Thrillist, PS (formerly PopSugar) and Eater saw layoffs this week as the company continues to “adapt” to the changing media landscape, Adweek reports. Thrillist and Eater will now share leadership and resources, and PS will enhance focus on its social, video and shopping sectors. {Adweek}
The latest Condé Nast layoffs include a number of C-suite executives
At least 14 employees at Condé Nast, including C-suite executives, editorial social media and event staffers, were let go in its most recent round of layoffs. Members of GQ, Allure and Self staff were reportedly cut. Jessica Cruel, editor-in-chief at Allure, will also oversee Self going forward. {Adweek}
Fragrance drove Ulta’s Q3 sales growth
Ulta saw comparable sales increase by 0.6% in Q3, with fragrance as its strongest category. Gender-neutral and men’s fragrance offerings saw the most growth, with new products from Armani, YSL and John Paul Gaultier fueling interest. Women’s fragrances by Kylie Jenner, Cosmic and Bella Hadid’s Orabella also brought new traction to the category. {Ulta}
Walter Greene dies at 74
The renowned fashion journalist Walter Greene passed in his New York City home on Dec. 2, reports WWD. Greene was known for his work at Modern Luxury’s Edition, Essence, Sister 2 Sister, Odyssey Couleur and more. Brands require support to withstand new EU sustainability regulations
The European Fashion Alliance released its latest “The Status of Fashion” report, revealing that brands need financial support to enact the changes required by upcoming EU sustainability regulations. Among these regulations are digital product passports (DPPs) in which brands will be required to detail the origin and the environmental impact of merchandise. However, the infrastructure necessary to achieve sustainability on such a wide scale may not exist yet. {WWD/paywalled}
What rising interest in animal-based products means for beauty
Vegan beauty brands face new market competition as interest in animal-derived ingredients such as beef tallow trend in online wellness communities. Nonetheless, the vegan beauty market is expected to see growth of nearly $10 billion by the end of 2030.
