These are the stories making headlines in fashion on Tuesday.

California officially bans fur
California is now the first state to ban the selling of fur including mink, chinchilla, lynx, fox, rabbit, beaver, coyote and other luxe furs. Materials like cowhide, deerskin, sheepskin, goatskin and shearling have been excluded from the ban in addition to pieces made for religious observances. Fines for breaking the law range up to $500 for a first offense and $1,000 for multiple offenses. {The New York Times}

Fashion brands are phasing out overlooked plastics
As sustainability becomes a top issue in the fashion industry, brands are phasing out overlooked plastics such as hangers, buttons and sequins, and opting for recycled and biodegradable alternatives. However, these eco-friendly options remain more expensive than virgin plastic. {Vogue Business}

Barneys has a potential bidder
Authentic Brands Group has emerged as one of the lead bidders for Barneys New York with Hudson’s Bay Co. as a potential partner. If negotiations are successful, ABG is expected to hand over the license to HBC, which could open Barneys departments within Saks Fifth Avenue stores. {WWD}

Openly queer models gain visibility
According to data from fashion search engine Tagwalk, openly queer models appeared in 25% of the top 68 runway shows this past season. The previous average appearance was just at 10-15% in runway shows since 2016. “We have an opportunity and a responsibility to use our platform in fashion […] to highlight people from this community,” said Samuel Ellis Scheinman, who has cast models for Louis Vuitton Men’s and Saint Laurent. {Business of Fashion}

Why the “It” bag is losing steam
The “It” handbag, once a staple in a woman’s closet, is dropping in sales. Consumer priorities are shifting towards versatility, leading to a rise in backpacks and non-fashion items like technology. Additionally, shoppers are looking elsewhere for status-signaling items, such as sneakers and expensive outerwear. {Quartz}
