Why are mass market products on indie runways?
There’s been a recent wave of mass market brands collaborating with independent designers, including Kate Barton partnering with Goldfish and Chopova Lowena featuring a jar of Hellmann’s mayonnaise on its runway. There have also been more unexpected collaborations, with Roksanda designing a clothing line for U.K. supermarket Asda and Brandon Maxwell serving as creative director for two Walmart lines. Vogue Runway’s José Criales-Unzueta unpacks this phenomenon, nothing that financial needs are the key driving factor of these partnerships. Plus, while some of the pairings may seem silly, that’s kind of the point: “The reason [these sorts of collaborations] work is because it has a sense of humor; it’s fun and unexpected,” Criales-Unzueta tells Vogue Business. {Vogue Business/paywalled}
