Founders: Ann Marie Simpson-Einziger, Mike Einziger and Edna Coryell

Origin Story: Mother Science was founded by Mike Einziger, lead guitarist of Incubus, and renowned violinist, Ann Marie Simpson-Einziger. In 2016, while on tour, Ann Marie developed tinea versicolor, a harmless skin condition that caused lightened patches of skin on her back. She wondered if there was some insight that could be used intentionally to reduce the look of dark spots on the skin. The couple assembled a team of leading scientists and, through their research, identified malassezin, a naturally occurring molecule found on skin with “dramatic skin health benefits,” including powerful results for dark spot reduction, brightening, smoothing and minimizing the look of lines and wrinkles, per the brand.

Mother Science is the only brand that uses this ingredient. The brand studied it on ex-vivo human skin, analyzing the expression of 22,000-plus genes per sample, over hundreds of samples, giving a deep knowledge of how the ingredient works on the skin. Mother Science has published scientific papers on malassezin in three dermatology journals. The brand’s groundbreaking clinical research on the novel use of malassezin in skin care has been presented to 50,000-plus dermatologists at numerous dermatology conferences over the past three years.
