As fashion insiders engage in their seasonal debate on whether New York Fashion Week holds the same spark it did years ago, what remains undeniable is that the city continues to be the go-to hub of platforming emerging talent. Perhaps no group of creatives can speak to this sentiment better than student designers: On Monday afternoon in Glass Studios, Parsons School of Design held its MFA 2024 fashion show.
The event showcased the designs of 11 graduating students: Patrick Taylor, Sijia Lyu, Ziqi Zhen, Jiaying Wang, Margarida Feilão, Yue Xu, Nan Yu, Yunhao Liao, Mohan Li, Liying Zheng and K.S. Tehara. The charm of student runway shows is that they embrace unbridled creativity, engaging with fashion in its truest — and most fun — form. This presentation certainly lived up to that expectation: There was no shortage of unique concepts, silhouettes, texture play and interesting proportions.
Standout designs included a sculptural bodysuit featuring a 3D-printed arm gauntlet made of resin, three-dimensional bleeding heart motifs, texture-blocked deconstructed suiting, mini skirts made of puffed upholstery and monster-shaped bags. There were also volcano-inspired prints, wearable garment bags and many uses of knitwear.
In a bid to create a more accessible show, as each model walked the catwalk, a commentator gave vocal descriptions of each outfit.
