Ever since announcing her engagement to Prince Harry, the world’s eyes have been fixed on Meghan Markle — and her style. We’ll be following the Meghan Markle Effect™ with our column, “Meghan Markle Wore a Thing.”
On Sunday, the Super Bowl was the sporting event most of us in the U.S. may have been fixating on — but for Meghan Markle and Prince Harry, it was the Invictus Games in Vancouver, British Columbia. The couple attended a series of events over the weekend, including a wheelchair basketball game between USA and Nigeria.
For the occasion, the Duchess of Sussex appeared in a pair of dark wash bootcut jeans (meaning flared denim had quite a weekend!) by Veronica Beard. This bellbottom-adjacent silhouette is a bit of a departure for Markle, who is known for her affinity for skinny jeans, as well as her commitment to them even as they fell out of favor among the masses.
She paired her flares with a chunky navy crew-neck sweater by La Ligne, which she layered beneath a gray jacket from Dôen (her particular tweed-and-suede version with faux-leather buttons is currently sold out on the brand’s website, but it’s still available in a few sizes in a rather chic all-black iteration).

The duchess finished her look with Stuart Weitzman black suede boots, small stud earrings and an easygoing ponytail. It’s sports spectator chic, something Markle has proven time and time again she does very well.
