The Duchess is trying to use her power to push product for good.
Ever since announcing her engagement to Prince Harry, the world’s eyes have been fixed on Meghan Markle — and her style. We’ll be following the Meghan Markle Effect™ with our column, “Meghan Markle Wore a Thing.”
It’s long been clear that Duchess of Sussex Meghan Markle is good at moving product. Every time she steps out the door in something new, it seems, the piece has a tendency to sell out. For the philanthropically-minded Duchess, it was perhaps only logical that she find a way to turn the public’s obsession with what she wears into something that would benefit the greater good. Her solution? A capsule collection of workwear pieces designed by a few different labels created to benefit the charity Smart Works, which seeks to help women transition back to work.
On Thursday, the Duchess herself showed up to the launch of the collection wearing pieces from the capsule: smart black pants by Jigsaw and a simple white button-up by her designer friend Misha Nonoo. (For each of these pieces sold in the next two weeks, an equivalent piece will be donated to Smart Works.) The Duchess styled the pieces with a brown Polo Ralph Lauren belt, Manolo Blahnik stilettos, a stack of skinny gold bangles and a pair of earrings that had been part of Princess Diana’s personal collection. Considering the purpose driving this particular outfit choice, one hopes that the Duchess’s famous selling power holds true this time around.
