On Thursday, Marie Claire announced Nikki Ogunnaike will serve as its new editor in chief, effective Aug. 8. Ogunnaike will lead the editorial strategy for print, digital, experiential and social for the publication and report to Hillary Kerr, chief content officer of Who What Wear and Marie Claire.
“Nikki is an absolute visionary, with a distinct point of view, peerless taste and unparalleled experience,” said Kerr. “To see her lead this historic brand into a new era and continue to grow Future’s Women’s Network is unquestionably exciting.”
In her new role, Ogunnaike will be responsible for expanding fashion and luxury coverage across all platforms, continuing to attract a diversified audience and improving content strategy.
“For nearly 30 years, Marie Claire has been the go-to source for women who seek to lead a life of purpose and power,” said Ogunnaike in a statement. “As a long-time admirer, I’m thrilled to join the Marie Claire team and lead this brand into a new era. Women who are passionate about their careers, personal style and the world around them will find a new destination that speaks to their entire identity. I can’t wait to begin this new chapter!”
Ogunnaike joins the Marie Claire team after nearly three years as senior digital director at Harper’s Bazaar, where she covered culture and style. (A rep for Hearst did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Ogunnaike’s departure from and replacement at Harper’s Bazaar.) Her journalism journey began after graduating from the University of Virgina in 2007 with a degree in Media Studies and Sociology. Shortly thereafter, Ogunnaike interned at Elle, then moved on to hold director and editor positions at the likes of GQ, Elle, Glamour and InStyle.
In a 2019 interview with Fashionista, Ogunnaike spoke on the impact of social media on her role as an editor, saying, “I think it’s important to provide people with a well-rounded experience when they come to your social platforms. It’s important for me to be known not just for the cute outfits that I wear, but also for the amount of time that I spend with my family and that I run half-marathons and that I care about politics and what’s happening in the world today.”
